    The endocannabinoid system: how it works

    Discovered in the 1990s, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex system found in the human body. Its role is linked to the body's internal balance, known as homeostasis. 

    Thanks to the endocannabinoid system, the human body can remain stable despite pain, hunger or fatigue. 

    The endocannabinoid system works through:

    • to receptors CB1 and CB2, which are found throughout the body

    • to endocannabinoids (or endogenous ligands), which bind to cannabinoid receptors

    • to enzymes involved in synthesis, transport and breakdown.

    As you can see, the endocannabinoid system helps our body function by regulating many processes involved in maintaining the body's vital balance.

    The ECS therefore regulates basic functions of the human body : blood pressure, temperature, blood sugar levels and more, as well as emotional regulation, appetite, learning ability and the regulation of inflammation…

    How CBD affects the endocannabinoid system


    CBD, or cannabidiol, belongs to the large family of cannabinoids, which includes nearly 200 compounds. Cannabinoids are molecules derived from hemp (also known as phytocannabinoids) that interact with cannabinoid receptors.


    Some of the best-known cannabinoids include: 


    • THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol

    • CBD, or cannabidiol

    • CBG, or cannabigerol


    Some cannabinoids, such as THC, bind directly to cannabinoid receptors. 


    CBD interacts only weakly with the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors, meaning that it has an “indirect” effect on the body. This explains why it does not alter consciousness—in other words, unlike THC, it is not psychoactive.


    This indirect mechanism of action is thought to be behind the properties commonly associated with CBD (anti-inflammatory, soothing, pain-relieving, sleep-promoting, etc.).
